Rough weather delays liner

The weather between Auckland and Lyttelton was the worst Mrs Louise Obenhous has encountered in more than 300 days of travelling in luxury liners. Mrs Obenhous, of Hamburg, arrived at Lyttelton abboard the cruise liner Sagafjord at noon yesterday, four hours behind schedule because of bad weather.
“I have experienced bad weather between Yokohama and Hawaii, but last night (Thursday) was the worst ever. Lots of people were sea-sick,” she said. The Sagafjord is sailing with 479 passengers and 365 crew on a 1988 world tour, lasting 164 days. About 80 per cent of the passengers are American, with British, Mexican, Canadians and Germans making up the remainder.
Many people travel just a segment of the tour. The next stop, Sydney, will be a changeover point, according to the cruise director, Mr Bob Haines. The average price of a cruise was about SUS7OO a day, although this varied greatly from those in the penthouse suite to those cabins on the lower decks, he said.
A garden party at Mona Vale was arranged for the passengers yesterday afternoon, although many people elected to take bus tours which were rescheduled from the morning after the ship’s late arrival. A group of passengers who had arranged to take a flight to Mount Cook had to cancel their plans because of the late arrival. Mrs Obenhous said she found travelling in a cruise ship an ideal holiday for a person such as herself who was travelling alone. She often found herself sailing with the same people she had sailed with before, on one of her 14 cruises.
About 67 per cent of the passengers had been aboard the Sagafjord before, and some had made a whole world cruise before, said Mr Haines. The Cunard Line, changed the World Cruise itinerary each year. New Zealand and Australia would not be ports of call for the 1989 cruise.
The ship usually stayed only one day in port, except for the main shopping ports, where the passengers liked to stay longer, said Mr Haines.
