Museum security

Security problems at the Canterbury Museum caused by restoration work on the building have been overcome, the museum director, Mr Michael Trotter, said. In a report to the museum trust board, Mr Trotter said during work at the museum surveillance systems and fire alarm cables had been cut. The latter caused a false alarm and evacuation of the museum. Dust

had also seeped through to exhibition areas from work areas.

Reporting on progress, Mr Trotter said most of these problems had been solved and reconstruction work was well underway. “The galleries and foyer have been stripped back to bare stone work and cracks and general deterioration are only too evident now,” he said. Staff were busy planning exhibition pro-

grammes, permanent displays, colour schemes and carpeting and lighting details, Mr Trotter said. The programme of temporary exhibitions will continue in the Visitor’s Lounge. The first for the year started last week with artist Alan Campbell’s impressions of Antarctica. Next month an exhibition acknowledging Rewi Alley’s contribution to the museum will be mounted.
