Protester threatens death fast
PA Wellington The protester who earlier pitched a tent and maintained a three-week vigil on the steps of Parliament Buildings has returned and threatens to fast to death if the closing of the Mapua Post Office is not reconsidered. Mr Pat Hogan says he is still incensed about the closing of his local post office near Nelson and the apathetic public reaction to the closings nationally. “I am a bit embarrassed to say it because I know it sounds very dramatic but I am going to fast to the death if the Government does not reopen the post office,” Mr Hogan told NZPA. “I refuse to go away and let this thing die. I hope my fast will put some fire into New Zealand and put some fire into the unions.”
Mr Hogan began his fast yesterday and although he was to return
home last evening, he plans to return to Parliament next week after putting his affairs in order.
With him is Mr Bill Malins, of Karamea, who planned to spend the rest of yesterday protesting on Parliament steps before returning to the South Island with Mr Hogan.
