Abuse of animals
Sir, —The Argentine Government’s recent ban on dissection and vivisection of animals in educational establishments (February 13 letter) strikes a blow to those who maintain the necessity of vivisection for instructional purposes. A further breakthrough in the field of scientific progress is the formation in Zurich, on October 24, 1987, of the International League of Doctors for the Abolition of Animal Experimentation, comprising a membership exclusively of doctors, surgeons, pharmacists, veterinarians and medical scientists. The league was founded following the first international Symposium of Doctors against Vivisection (Zurich, April 25, 1987), where scientists from many countries presented papers demonstrating the counter-productiveness of using animals to seek cures for human health problems. These papers are being published in several different languages. — Yours, etc., V. F. SANDS. February 16, 1988.
