Gondola

Sir,—The proposed gondola is not a satisfactory development for the Port Hills-Mount Cavendish. It is not acceptable development to change the environment of Heathcote Valley, now on trial and under threat of a life sentence which no ransom could restore. Heathcote Valley is an innocent victim because it happens to be standing alongside and provides the only access available for Payeo to use for its commercial development. Its scheme represents pure delusion. It will oppose, not facilitate, public enjoyment of an area which is now freely open. It will limit access, allowing only those who can afford the privilege, thus destroying the personality of the area. Anyway, Mount Cavendish was bequeathed to the people of New Zealand in perpetuity and this legacy is protected by the law of the land right now. So, will someone tell me why so much valuable energy is being sacrificed on an apparently futile issue? — Yours, etc., AUDREY M. PARKER. February 17, 1988.
