Age discrimination
PA Auckland Some elderly people say they want the law rewritten to stop discrimination on the basis of age. The Human Rights Commission is receiving regular calls from people who say they have been unfairly treated in employment or job-seeking because they are elderly.
Concerned people want age included in the human rights code that protects against sexual, racial • and religious discrimination.
Many elderly people suffer discrimination in the workplace, the commission said, unless the workers are covered by a union, they have little legal protection. “Age discrimination is an issue the commission would like to get more involved in,” said a mediation officer. The commission has made recommendations to the government on the subject and advised people to lobby their local members of Parliament for change.
