‘Gorilla’ glasses

Sir, —“The Press” of January 23 reports that TVNZ forced a Westport firm to stop selling the 3-D glasses developed by Kelvin Johnson. Would you please approach the Minister of Broadcasting in order to find out the powers of TVNZ to prevent the sale of such glasses and other items. — Yours, etc., EWEN McCANN, MICHAEL DYER, CHRISTOPHER DYER, JOSEPHINE DYER, MARTYN DYER. January 24, 1988.

[The acting secretary of the Broadcasting Corporation, Mr

Reg Russ, replies: “The Minister of Broadcasting has no involvement in the day-to-day business operations of Broadcasting, which are subject to normal business contracts. The Broadcasting Corporation notes that TVNZ supplied sample glasses to viewers free for two weeks, but was in no way involved with their sale and had nothing to do with requiring them to be withdrawn from sale in Westport. The New York company -with which TVNZ was associated in the 3-D venture appointed an official Westport distributor who telephoned that company’s Auckland office reporting that ‘unofficial’ glasses were being sold. The New York company’s lawyer contacted the ‘unofficial’ Westport retailer, who agreed to withdraw the glasses from sale.”]
