Biscuit wheat pool finalised

The Crossbow-Bounty biscuit wheat pool run by Challenge Seeds has returned a net price to growers of $180.38 at tonne for wheat grown in the 1986-87 season.

The result was highly satisfactory considering the market conditions during 1987, said the company’s cereals manager, Mr Bryan Aitken. The pool attracted 14,000 tonnes of utility and biscuit wheat of the Crossbow and Bounty varieties grown on 2000 hectares.

The growing season was

ideal for biscuit wheat with low protein levels which allowed a big percentage of the pool to be sold as speciality biscuit wheat. Most of the balance of the pool was sold as gristing wheat and a small amount was sold to the feed industry. Challenge Seeds is running another biscuit wheat pool this season and has added two new varieties, Jasper and Brock, both speciality biscuit wheats which feature high yields and low chemical inputs. They are both autumn sown.
