12 years jail for guerrilla

NZPA-Reuter Paris A French woman guerrilla leader, emaciated, pale, and barely able to appear in court on the seventy-ninth day of a hunger strike, was sentenced yesterday to 12 years in prison for the attempted murder of two policemen. Nathalie Menigon, aged 30, one of four presumed leaders of the urban guerrilla group, Action Directe, admitted firing 15 shots from pistols at policemen in 1980 to escape arrest. No one was hit.

Her trial went ahead after the court turned down a motion for adjournment lodged by the defence lawyer, Bernard Ripert, who said his client was too weak to follow the proceedings.
