Presentation for service

Charles Moore remembers ’ the days when he and his workmates could clear a space at a hotel bar merely by walking into the room. After working all day in the old casings department at the Islington works the men smelt so bad that “no-one came near you” in the hotel, said Mr Moore.

Although that changed several years ago with the modernisation of the casings department it is still bound to be one of the topics of conversation at a function this evening to mark 2451 combined years of service by 69 men.

Mr Moore’s 48 years of service top the list of the 69 men who will be presented with gold quartz watches by Waitaki Inter-

national’s Islington works. The men receiving the watches have each contributed more than 30 years service at the works. It is the first time the presentations have been made at the works but it is hoped it will become an annual event. The idea was one which came from the company, Borthwick’s, when it merged with Wai-taki-N.Z. Refrigeration to form Waitaki International, Ltd. Eight of the men, including Mr Moore, have retired in the last 17 months while the rest are still working. Mr Moore, who was at the works from the age of 14 until he was 62, said the gold watch presentation was a “very good gesture.” He had enjoyed his job andiwas full of praise for.

his fellow workmates and foremen.

Although more than 30 years of his time at the works was in the casings department, working with the stomach linings of sheep, it had not put him off sausages or chipolatas.

He said that many visitors to the department declared they would never eat sausages again but “I still enjoy them.” The following men will receive the long-service awards this evening: D. J. Ashton (44 years service), R. A. Borland (41), G. W. Breading (38), B. J. Brownie (35), R. Cassie (32), N. M. Chandler (32), J. J. Cowan (35), K. J. Dorgan (31), A. M. Forrester (35), A.
