White to lead N.Z. XI
PA Dunedin The captain, David White, is the surprise choice to open the batting for the President’s XI which begins a three-day match against the England cricket team at Carisbrook today.
. The New Zealand selectors have included only one specialist opening batsman, Kevin Burns, the sheet-anchor of so many Otago innings this season.
In the bowling department, Karl Treiber, the versatile Northern Districts left-armer who can bowl seamers, and spinners, has had to pull out of the President’s team with a back injury and has been replaced by Jonathan Millmow, the Wellington paceman. Meanwhile, England has omitted Chris Broad, Graham Dilley and Bruce French from the 12 for the match.
The England players selected for the match who did not participate in the test at Lancaster Park are Jack Richard (Surrey), the reserve wicketkeeper on tour, Neal Radford, the Worcestershire pace bowler, Neil Fairbrother, the Lancashire left-hand batsman, and Eddie Hemmings, an offspinner. The teams are:
