Barrier positions could prove deciding factor in Cambridge feature

Special correspondent Auckland Emcee’s advantage over Elmer Gantry and Speedy Cheval in the barrier draw could be the deciding factor in the $20,000 Cambridge Classic at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting at Cambridge this evening. The Majestic Chance—Ceredel four-year-old will begin from No. 4 in the mobile 2200 metres. Elmer Gantry will start from No. 5 and Speedy Cheval No. 6. Speedy Cheval and Elmer Gantry finished second and third respectively behind Rostriever Hanover in last Saturday’s $150,000 TNT New Zealand Messenger Championship at Alexander Park. Emcee, after being held up at a vital stage, finished strongly down the outer for sixth. Mark Purdon, who drove Emcee, said yesterday that he was pleased with the horse’s effort and he expects another good performance this evening. "He got held up by Bionic Chance, who wasn’t going that well,” said Purdon. “She was the last horse I thought would be struggling.” Emcee proved a costly failure in the Solo Blue Chip Stakes at Cambridge the time before and Purdon was at a loss to explain the performance at the time. He developed a rash afterwards, which indicated he may not have been at his best on that occasion. Before that, though, Emcee was in rare form, and with Purdon at the helm, he swept unbeaten through the Great Jetbet: 8 Race 1 6.10 ROY GRIFFIN MEMORIAL HANDICAP TROT $4100; CO; 2600 m 1 0000 Jim 1 S. Northern Bloodstock series at Claudelands. In the final he beat Elmer Gantry. Roy and Barry Purdon train Emcee at Cievedon. They have a fine record in the race, having won the Cambridge Classic previously with Comedy Lad (1985) and Luxury Liner (1986). Apart from Emcee, the Purdons have Reilly and Tax Credit in this year’s race. Reilly will be driven by Brent Mangos, who has won the last two Cambridge Classics with Luxury Liner and That Fella (1987). Elmer Gantry’s third in the Messenger was a gallant effort and driver Tony Milina, believes the horse may well have won had they been left alone in front. “Brunswick had us on for a time early,” said Milina, “and when he had another go later on my bloke got stirred up and started to race fiercely. Who knows, we might have won if they hadn’t done that.” Speedy Cheval looked as though he had beaten Rostriever Hanover in the Messenger, but the judge gave the decision to the latter by a nose. Peter Wolfenden drove an almost perfect race with Speedy Cheval and will again drive the South Island gelding this evening. An even field of three-year-old fillies will contest the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the D.B. Export Flying Fillies’ Heat. Vulcan Lady, Julie Vance and Precious Vance should dispute favouritism, with Tintern Heather and Miss Ardmore also worthy of respect. 6 7006 Ned Dundee 6 M. Wallis It 8 8796 Rock Star 8 S.
