Sound Reason leading sire
The victory of Sounds Like Fun in the $lOO,OOO Cambridge Stud International Stakes at Te Rapa had an ironic twist in that it helped his sire, Sound Reason, extend his lead over the Cambridge Stud star, Sir Tristram, on the sires’ list for the current season. At the end of January Sound Reason had left 20 winners of over $700,000, comfortably ahead of Sir Tristram whose 16 winners had won nearly $600,000. The Riccarton Stud sire Palatable, which has had 90 starters so far, has left 37 winners of just over $300,000 and was eighth on the list at the end of last month. The Auckland Cup victory of Sea Swift has carried Auk into third place on the list though he has had only eight winners of 10 races. Auk also sired Sea Glow, the winner of the 3200 m McKinnon Stayers’ Plate at Te Rapa on Tuesday. The. six-year-old mare may not be another Sea Swift but she has a connection with Ashburton just the same. Her dam, Cumin, an imported mare, earlier left John Peel a good but ill-fated performer for Andrea and Jim Lalor. Sound Reason was third leading sire last year behind Sir Tristram and Palatable. Other leading winners by him have been Candide, Reasonable Lady Reinvest, Pell Mell, Sound Belt and Torcello in the north while in the South Island St James, Hypatia, Ultra Sound, Sound King and No Reason have won races for him.
