Stamina test for Rostriever Hanover at Addington

By

JEFF SCOTT

Rostriever Hanover’s endless reserves of stamina will be put to the test once more from a wide draw in the $90,000 Motorcorp Honda 2000 at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington tomorrow evening, but he looks equal to defeating a top line-up for the third time this month.

The Ashburton pacer, an athlete in the Gammalite-Lightning Blue mould, handed out superb beatings to New Zealand’s top Inter-Dominion hope, Luxury Liner and race rival, Lord Lenny, at Auckland a fortnight ago, then gave just enough to bag the 5150,000 New Zealand Messenger from a second-row draw there last Saturday.

If he can produce the goods again in the first leg of the Addington T.A.B. double tomorrow, the .Plat du Jour gelding will more than triple his career earnings for the month. He went north with a $72,155 bankroll from nine wins and if he picks up his twelfth victory tomorrow, his earnings will skyrocket to $241,280.

Rostriever Hanover, whose season’s record reads 10 starts for seven wins, two seconds and a fourth, was a winner over tomorrow’s distance of 2000 m mobile at Addington Raceway last year in 2:30.41, a class record for the track when only a C2 pacer and shoule be able to improve several seconds on that tomorrow.

Lord Lenny bounced back to his peak with a sizzling win in a 2:1.8 mile rate from the 2200 m (stand) at Alexandra Park last Saturday, finishing best from a handy spot with the leaders running 57.5 s for their last 800-metres. The Pukekohe-trained pacer will start from the handy number three slot (allowing for the withdrawals of emergencies) in the all front-line 2000-metre

despatch and should be in the firing line throughout.

Master Mood has drawn wide at barrier nine but showed with a dashing finish at the Addington trials last'week he has trained on since his narrow defeat by Frangelico on the course last month.

Last season’s star would only need to reproduce a performance such as his third run at the Inter-Dominions last March when he paced his opening mile in 1:55.8 in the open, then was just beaten by Paleface Bubble in 2:26.65 for the mobile 2000 m, to give the others a shake.

Frangelico has drawn handily but is inclined to race fiercely from the mobile if rushed along early, making her a

problem horse of the field. She is capable of winning and went down narrowly to Luxury Liner and Lightning Blue in the thrilling Air New Zealand Free-For-All over this trip at the N.Z. Cup meeting in November. Sir Alba and Frangelico’s stablemate, Sossy, will be on trial for Inter-Dominion campaigns and both are capable of getting into the finish with runs to suit. Kahuna Pele, unable to work clear over the closing stages in his latest race at Addington on February 5, is favoured to win the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Blenheim Road Motor Hotel Trot.

Bellam, another with traffic problems last time, Wedgewood, Firm Offer and Westham are other trifecta chances.
