Lewis magic evident
NZPA London The 1983 Wimbledon finalist, Chris Lewis, has been given a warm welcome on his return to the London tennis scene.
Lewis, aged 30, stepped down from top tennis at the end of 1985 after a decade on the circuit, but was back on an English court this week in the
national indoor league. Attracted to play for Woking Computerland from south of London, Lewis had his opening match against American Mike DePalmer in a onesetter which was “a breathtaking reminder of those few Wimbledons past,” said the “Daily Mail.”
Describing him as “playing with all the verve of a teen-ager,” the Mail noted he lost the set 7-6 after a tie break went against him 8-6.
“But Lewis chased every last shot, from a player who has twice been voted the finest singles exponent of American team tennis.
