Evernden wins his match the tough way
NZPA-AP Lyon, France Kelly Evernden, of New Zealand, took the match from Canada’s Martin Laurendeau, 6-4 7-5, in the second round of the 5NZ420.764 Nabisco Grand Prix tennis tournament. Australia’s Broderick Dyke defeated France’s Tarik Benhabiles. Dyke, ranked ninetysixth beat the 72nd-ranked Benhabiles, 6-4 6-4.. Dyke’s compatriot, Brad Drewett was defeated by France’s Thierry Tulasne, 6-4 6-7 7-5. Thierry Pham, another French player, defeated the Czech player, Petr Korda, ranked ninety-second in the world and ,a member of Czechoslavakia’s Davis Cup team. Battling in the first set to a long tie-break (13-15) Pham took the next two sets 6-4 6-4. American’s Bill Scanlon had no trouble defeating the Nigerian, Nduka Odizor, 6-2 6-2. In Rotterdam, the unseeded American, Dan Goldie, ousted Emilio Sanchez, the number four seed from Spain, in the first-round of the 1988 Nabisco Grand Prix tennis tournament. Goldie's surprise 7-5 6-4 victory means he will face the unseeded Dutchman, Mi-
chiel Schapers, in secondround play.
In other action on the second day of first-round play, the unseeded Czech, Milan Srejber, edged past his seventh-seeded compatriot, Tomas Smid, 7-6 6-3. Meanwhile, the fifth-seeded Henri Leconte, of France, trounced Stanislav Birner, of Czechoslovakia, 6-3 6-2; and Jonas Svensson, of Sweden, the number eight seed, beat Luis Mattar, of Brazil 6-4 6-2. Paul Chamberlin, of the U.S. ousted Spain’s Sergio Casal, 6-1 6-1; and Miroslav Mecir, of Czechoslovakia, beat his countryman, Branislav Stankovic, 6-3 6-1. The tournament ends on Sunday.
