Safety queried in hang gliding

PA Wellington Civil Aviation officials should keep a closer eye on hang gliding clubs, according to a report on a Wellington accident which seriously injured a learner pilot.

A beginner lost control and flew directly into a hill face 12 metres above the ground, while an instructor was giving directions from the foot of the hill, said the air accident inspector’s report. It said a hill with stronger lift should have been used so the beginner ciguld soar above the hill without difficulty. The hill

was only 30 metres high. The report also found the instructor did not have a rating from the Hang Gliding Association, which breached the association’s operations requirements and a Civil Aviation safety order guideline. The report recommended surveillance of hang gliding clubs by the Civil Aviation Division be strengthened. It also recommended that the association enforce its own requirements rather than delegating enforcement to individual clubs. <5
