Monkey cruelty in film alleged

PA Wellington Animal trainers involved in the film “Project X,” released in Wellington by Twentieth Century Fox, could face criminal charges for alleged abuse of chimpanzees during filming, animal welfare officials say. The Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has criticised the film, now being shown by Amalgamated Hoyts cinemas.

The recommendation to file charges came after a three-month inquiry sparked by affidavits from crew members and others.

The alleged acts of cruelty included chimpanzees being beaten with blackjacks, clubs and , closed fists.
