Blast for Contra rebels

NZPA-Reuter Managua Nicaragua yesterday blasted the Contra rebels for wanting to delay a second round of direct peace talks, saying this proved they were not interested in a negotiated end to the bloodshed. A statement from President Daniel Ortega’s office said the Government had asked the Catholic Church to try to persuade the rebels to attend a meeting origin-

ally set to start today in Guatemala. Rebel leaders earlier said in Miami that the cease-fire talks would have to be delayed until a mediator, Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo, returned to Central America from a visit to Europe. The rebels did not specify why Cardinal Obando had to attend. Cardinal Obando was in Rome during the first round of talks in Costa

Rica late last month, and the meeting was mediated by a Managua auxiliary, Bishop Bosco Vivas. The Contras have vowed to continue their fight against the Nicaraguan Government in spite of a vote in the United States House of Representatives last Wednesday rejecting President Ronald Reagan’s request for an extra 8U536.25 million ($54.73M) in aid.
