Ownsworth a main chance for cycling medals

Canterbury’s main chance for medals in the national hard track cycling championships at the Cook Gardens circuit in Wanganui, will come in the juniors mainly from one man — Russell Ownsworth — but in the seniors there are several titles being defended.

Ownsworth took all the titles in the Canterbury championships and in Wanganui he will be riding in all events except the sprint.

Other juniors who will be vying for the New Zealand titles in two weeks are John Rastrick and Tony Creelman, both riding in the 1000 m,

sprint, 8000 m and team pursuit race.

Marcus Flack, another Canterbury rider who fared well in the regional championships, is unavailable for the nationals and Hamish Upston may not be going. This will mean that Hamish Ferguson, originally a non-travelling reserve for the junior team pursuit, will now travel. There are fewer juniors this year because all the talent is concentrated around a few riders.

In the senior team, Jon Andrews will be defending his 15,000 m and sprint titles. William Rastrick will be vy-

ing for the sprint, 15,000 m and tandem titles and will be one of the strongest riders on the Wanganui track. He will ride the tandem with Murray Steele, who is making a comeback in track cycling. Steele will also ride the 100 m, sprint and 15,000 m events.

Nigel Donnelly, who is in the trialing team for the Seoul Olympics, will be at Wanganui for both individual and teams pursuits, the points race, 1000 m and 15,000 m. He will be a strong chance for a medal.

Canterbury is sending only two women to the nationals,

Gael Ashby and Lisa Gooding. Both are riding the sprint and pursuit. The team is.— Seniors: J. Andrews, N. Donnelly, W. Rastrick, J. Smith, M. Steele, C. Marryatt, M. Lucas, C. Jordan, M. Leahy, R. Scott, I. Dickie, C. Hillis.

Juniors: R. Ownsworth, J. Rastrick, T. Carswell, T. Creelman, C. Barnsley, B. Hart, H. Upston, A. Sullivan, H. Ferguson. Novices: T. Skilling, B. Iles, J. Hall, K. Upston, C. Mclntyre, D. Wildermoth, M. Ogle. Women: G. Ashby, L. Gooding. *
