Noble Khan, Strike Regal best bets for Wairoa

Special correspondent . . „ ™ Gisborne The Hastings galloper, Noble Khan, ought to have the edge on the topweight Strike Regal in what may develop into a two horse affair in the Lion Brown Handicap at the Wairoa meeting today.

The race is the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the second leg being on the Ferry Hotel Handicap, where first day winner I’m Syd seems certain to make a bold attempt to land a double for the meeting. Noble Khan won at this meeting last year but then suffered a leg injury and was put aside. He resumed with three sprint races as a lead-up to return to middle distance racing. His first beyond 1600 m was when third behind Beau De Zure at Hastings in the New Year and then showed he had completely recovered with a narrow yet gutsy win over Travertine at Woodville. Strike Regal also won on the track last season but since then has advanced his record with a further six wins. His latest was at Otaki in December after which he

failed in the Nathans Memorial at the Auckland Cup fixture. Trainer, Peter Lock, has freshened him since but with 57kg and without a run for six weeks he could be all the better for - today’s race and will strip a fitter horse for the Cup on the final day. While the brilliant Commanding Officer is an acceptor for the second leg, there is no certainty of him starting. In an event where there are no apprentice claims and at 1485 m he may be reserved for the Wairarapa meeting on Saturday. In any event he may be pressed to keep out first day winner I’m Syd, which is also engaged at Tauherenikau although already at the track. Today’s event looks easy money for I’m Syd in any case.
