Aust, takes a mauling

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed sharply weaker yesterday as all sectors came under selling pressure, following poor performances on overseas markets overnight. Brokers said weaker finishes in London and Wall Street put industrial stocks under pressure and mining stocks were depressed by reports that gold prices could slump to SUS4OO an ounce. “The market looked quietly easier in the morning but took a by the close as early nervousness in the industrial sector spread to the other areas,” one broker said. The all ordinaries fell 22.6 points (1.8 per cent) to 1180.6. It is only the second time the all ordinaries has closed under 1200 since September 1986. The other time was November 11 last year when the index closed at 1151.6, its lowest level following the October crash. The gold marker fell 34.2 points (2.4 per cent) to 1374.8, its lowest since September 1986, and the all resources shed 13.2 (2.0 per cent) to 620.4, a level last seen in July 1986. News Corp lost 60c to 1040 c, Bond Media 3c to 48c, Lend Lease 35c to 1110 c, Westfield Holdings 20c to 490 c, Goodman Fielder 15c to 190 c and Arnotts 8c to 450 c. Entrepreneurs also suffered, with Bell Group down 22c to 140 c, Adsteam off 15c at 400 c, Elders down 16c at 272 c and lEL 8c to 130 c. Elsewhere, BHP was off 12c to 632 c, Brambles shed 16c to 774 c and Burns Philp 20c to 370 c. FAI Insurances rose 10c to 430 c after a court ruling allowing it to trade its stake in Cumberland, which was steady at 79c. In spite of steady bullion prices overnight and during the day gold stocks fell following a U.K. analyst’s comment that gold could fall as low as BUS3BO/400 an ounce. Renison lost 50c to 640 c, Metana 40c to 610 c, Bougainville 15c to 275 c and Western Mining 11c to 392 c. Ten cent losses took Poseidon to 200 c and Eastmet to 100 c. Sons of Gwalia went against the trend, gaining 20c to 520 c. Other resource stocks to suffer included CRA, off 10c at 460 c, AGL, down 10c at 220 c, and Santos, 2c off at 370 c.
