New emphasis on country, folk
The Malvern Country Folk Festival, at the Coalgate home of John and Deirdre Grenell, begins on Friday evening. Whitecliffs has been the venue for the festival which started seven years ago when a few hundred people gathered to share the Grenells’ love of music. Last year 4000 attended the family-style event. Country-folk music will be emphasised on the
musical programme this year. Other forms of entertainment at the festival include fringe theatre, buskers, folk music and accoustic performances by festival-goers themselves. A full programme of children’s activities includes face painting and donkey rides. The festival runs from 7 p.m. on Friday to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Artists performing at the festival include the Pioneer Pog ’n’ Scroggin
Bush Band, Al Hunter, Martha Louise, Mime River, John Grenell, Mike Harding, Coalrangers, Steve Thomas, and Purple Inc. Workshops will also be part of the Malvern Country Folk Festival on subjects including wholefoods, basic banjo, willow basket making, gardening, parenting and mime. Basic camping facilities are provided for the two-
day festival and there are also campsites for tents, caravans and house trucks. Stalls selling crafts and food will be set up. As the size of the festival is limited there will be no gate sales. No dogs or open fires are allowed. Tickets are available from C.J.’s Music store and Radar Records in Cashel Street and the Crystal Plaza shop in Cathedral Square.
