New toilets delayed

Work on a new toilet block in Barrington Park has been delayed by concerns of nearby residents about the security and location of the building.

Construction of the new block at the southern edge of the park on Barrington Street was to have begun today. It will now not begin before the parks and recreation committee of the Christchurch City Council receives a report about the residents’ concerns at its meeting tomorrow.

The council’s director of parks and recreation, Mr Neiel Drain, said that

he had halted work on the block until he could bring councillors up to date on tomorrow.

A Barrington Street resident, opposite the new block, had contacted him about the chosen site and possible problems with security.

Mr Drain doubted there would be security problems. The new block was much more visible than the previous toilets.

The council decided on the new block in response to a petition signed by 4500 people last year, callling for new toilets for the park.
