Photo-finish in senior sprint

Jon Andrews (Papanui) beat club-mate William Rastrick in the senior 200 m sprint final decided only by a photo-finish at the Canterbury track cycling championships at Denton Park yesterday. The sprint, which was a best-of-three, was decided in the last race. Andrews convincingly won the first race in 11.855. Rastrick responded in the second and after some slow and tactful racing won by a bike-length in 11.935.

In the decider Rastrick lead out and approaching the last comer before the 200 m mark was still ahead on the top of the track.

Both riders came down together, Andrews easily passed Rastrick over the 200 m mark and in the last bend Rastrick, using all his strength, began to catch the elusive Andrews. In the home straight it appeared as if both crossed the line together. A photograph was asked for to decide the title — Andrews had just pipped Rastrick. In the national track cycling championships in Wanganui this month it is likely these riders will meet again in the sprint final, then Andrews will be defending New Zealand title. and in the qualifying rounds for the pursuit finals several extremely fast times were recorded. In the junior 25km points race, which started with 14 riders, a crash 10 laps into the race reduced the field. The race was restarted with 12 riders and in the remaining 54 laps, six riders dropped off because of injuries suffered in the crash or because of mechanical failure. This week’s facing, starting on Friday evening, will be distance races and individual pursuits. The programme goes through Saturday and finishes Sunday evening.
