Shark sighting empties surf

A shark 'sighting cleared the crowded surf at Taylors Mistake for about 40 minutes yesterday morning. The 1.3 m shark was seen by surfboard riders about 10 a.m. The publicity officer for the Canterbury Surf Life-saving Association, Mr John Monck, said two riders saw the shark at the Boulder Bay end of the beach, about 800 m offshore. Two other riders came ashore soon after and also reported the shark.

“We cleared the bathers out of the water and most of the surfboard riders,” Mr Monck said. “We launched an inflatable rescue boat and patrolled right along the whole of Taylors Mistake and around the cliff faces for about 20 minutes,” he said. There were no further sightings and swimmers were allowed back in the water. About 2000 people crowded Taylors Mistake yesterday in the warm weather.
