Champ modest after victory
PA Hastings Taranaki’s latest national champion, teenager Sonia Barry, was quietly modest about her convincing win over 5000 m on Saturday. The championship was held at the second grand prix track and field meeting rather than at the national championships in Hamilton in March. Although the race was missing the defending champion, Anne Audain, of Auckland, and the in-form Dianne
Rodger (Waikato), Barry had to overcome a strong and experienced field to secure her first national senior track title.
At the age of 18, one of New Zealand’s most promising women middle distance runners, Barry clocked 16 minutes 06.47 seconds to finish comfortably ahead of national women’s cross-coun-try captain Mary O’Connor (Canterbury, 16:07.51) and early pace-maker, Barbara Moore (Wellington, 16:17.72).
