SUBURBAN Sumner and New Brighton have already secured firstinnings points in the latest round of senior A suburban cricket while Merivale-Papa-nui and Hornby are in relatively strong positions after play on Saturday. At Riccarton Domain Sumner won the toss and quickly notched up 193 for seven before declaring after 35 overs. Owen Southen and Ray Steele saw Sumner off to a good start and later in the innings Stephen Booth showed his experience, hitting and placing his shots for a well-compiled 84 not out, the best senior A score of the day. Wayne Clark, for Upper Riccarton, had the best figures with four wickets for 54 runs. Sumner then had Upper Riccarton promptly in trouble with three wickets falling before the tea break and another two toppling just after the break. The fall of wickets continued with Sumner finishing with a 73-run advantage. Don Braid, for Sumner, took five of the wickets and Booth three. Batting again, Sumner carried through to stumps to be 32 for two. At Edgar Mclntosh Park, Merivale-Papanui was invited to bat first after Richmond Working Men’s Club won the toss. Merivale scored 193 before declaring, Greg Mander and Kevin Collins being the chief contributors.

For Richmond, Russell Polenski did the damage with four wickets to his credit. Richmond is struggling to match Merivale’s first innings; it trails by 56 runs with only four overs remain-

At Denton Oval, Heathcote after winning the toss was restricted by Hornby to 159 from 50 overs. Robert Hay and Kit Chambers each scored 33 runs.

Hornby, in reply, has 15 overs remaining of the allotted 50, and is trailing by only 19 runs with seven wickets in hand. The two not out batsmen are Bob Kerr and Ross Morgan, Kerr and Trevor Flutey earlier putting on a valuable partnership. The remaining match is evenly poised although New Brighton has scored firstinnings points over Southern Districts at Beckenham Park. Chasing 174, Brighton has passed Southern Districts’ total and declared at 182 for eight with Andrew Keeling and Wayne Adams successful, scoring 81 and 63 not out respectively. Keeling was fortunate to score the runs he did because he was dropped on more than one occasion. There was only one century scored and that went to a senior B player, Murray Emmerson, of Halswell. Of the team’s 307, Emmerson scored 147 before being bowled. He had opnly one chance, when dropped on 82. There were two hat-tricks achieved. These went to Hamish McKay, of the New Brighton third C grade, with four wickets for seven, and the Richmond Working Men’s Club fourth B player, Brent Rawless, with his three wickets for 10 runs.
