Alf the bigot
Warren Mitchell, who plays the bigoted Alf in “In Sickness and in Health” (8.20 p.m. on One), believes writer Johnny Speight is not a political writer — and Speight himself agrees. Whatever political points there are to be made, he says, must develop naturally out of the character. “The character almost speaks for himself now,” says Speight. “He’s chauvinist, sure he is, but then most of our society is. But anyone who claims to take what he sees as face value ... well, there’s nothing you can do but ship them out.”
