Exports of pasture seed soar
Exports of grass and legume seeds last year from New Zealand almost doubled to $3O million. More than 14,000 tonnes of pasture seeds were exported to over 30 countries, according to the Seeds Promotion Council. Mr Ross Smith, the council’s chairman, said 1987 was the year when New Zealand appeared on the map as a small seeds producer. Traders at the international seeds congress in Christchurch in November were impressed with the sophisticated techniques New Zealand used for seed production and the high quality of the seeds. “You can be sure the industry will be making the most of the contacts established at this conference and will be looking for an increase in sales this year,” he said.
