Waldheim acted as interpreter

NZPA-Reuter New York The Austrian President, Kurt Waldheim, says in an interview to be published next week that he took part in negotiations which led to the deportation of thousands of Italian soldiers to slave labour camps. But he says he believed at the time that the soldiers were being sent back home from Greece after Italy surrendered in 1943 to the Allies. In the interview with internationally syndicated columnist Ranan Lurie, Dr Waldheim was also asked if he ever killed anyone in World War Two. He replied: “In Russia I can’t remember having done it and I didn’t.” Dr Waldheim, whose World War Two service in the German Army in the Balkans has been investigated by a team of international historians, said he participated as an interpreter in negotiations that led to the deportations of thousands of Italian soldiers from Greece.
