Black stilt eggs hatched
Ten black stilt pairs breeding in the wild were actively “managed” by the Conservation Department this season, and 50 eggs were laid. The “management” group protected nests against predators, and artificially incubated some of the eggs, said Mr Dave Murray, a conservation officer with the department of Twizel. The chicks were returned to the black stilts for rearing. Mr Murray said that 39 of the 50 eggs hatched, with 11 failing due to predators or infertility. Of the 39 chicks, 12 had fledged, and a further three were expected to fly soon, Mr Murray said.
