Leading riders out of cycling

MALCOLM CONDIE
The Canterbury track cycling championship will start this evening at Denton Park. Two weekends of racing have been scheduled. Because of the number of events in the programme and the number of riders to compete in longer-dis-tance events, the Canterbury Cycling Centre has rostered the championships for this evening, tomorrow and Sunday as well as Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday next week. Three top riders will not be competing this year because of injuries suffered in crashes at non-cham-pionship meets at Denton Park in the last two weeks. Brian Fowler, who has dominated longdistance track racing in New Zealand for several years, broke his wrist and will not be riding for another six weeks. He will also miss the national championships in Wanganui. On Wednesday evening at Denton Park, a pile-up in the last event, the 8000 m scratch race, resulted in injuries to the senior riders, William Rastrick, Paul Kircher and Russell Ownsworth. However, these riders will race in the Canterbury championships. Alex Laplanche and Richard Scott were not so lucky. Laplanche broke his wrist, putting him out of track cycling for the rest of the season, and Scott suffered injuries which will keep him from racing this week-end. He hopes to compete next weekend.
© Chris Nicholson will have to be among the first five riders in the Kiwi Lager criterium race in Dunedin on Sunday to win the series. He leads the points table with 28 points. The final round, to be raced on the Dunedin Octagon circuit, will have doublepoints status.
