Unseeded pair in tennis quarter-final
PA Auckland The former world champion junior, Emanuelle Derly (France), will meet another unseeded player, Clare Wood (Britain), today for a semi-final singles place in the NutriMetics women’s international tennis tournament in Auckland. The top seed, Patty Fendick (United States) will play the twelfth seed, Sandra Wasserman (Belgium), while the third seed, Terry Phelps, will meet a fellow American, Beverley Bowes, the fifth seed. In the fourth quarterfinal, the American, Gretchen Magers, seeded fourth, will play the seventh seed, Sara Gomer (Britain). Neither Derly nor Wood has lost a set in the three rounds of the event. Derly, aged 17, has beaten two seeds. On Wednesday she ousted the second seed, Anne Minter (Australia). Late yesterday, partnering Ann Devries (Bel-
gium), Derly eliminated the New Zealanders, Belinda Cordwell and Julie Richardson, from the Drake Personnel doubles. The Kiwis, who lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-7, (5-7), were the third seeds, while the winners were unseeded. Cordwell lost her thirdround match to Magers, 36, 3-6, while Ruth Seeman, the only other New Zealander left in the singles, was given no chance by Phelps, who won 6-1, 6-0. Phelps, ranked 40 in the world, fired back returns at such a clip that Seeman’s ground strokes were not their usual immaculate length. Seeman’s volleying and serving was also less effective than* usual. Another 17-year-old in the quarter-finals, Sandra Wasserman, continued to make an impact on the tournament, beating Ann Devries, also of Belgium, 6-2, 6-2. All the doubles seeds except for Richardson and Cordwell have advanced to the quarter-finals.
