Emcee has big handicap to overcome in Cambridge feature

Special correspondent Auckland Emcee may not have everything his own way in the Solo Blue Chip Stakes at the Bay of Plenty Trotting Club’s meeting at Cambridge this evening, but there is little doubt he will start a warm favourite for the race.

The four-year-old son of Majestic Chance has been in grand form this term. He has won six of his seven starts, including the inaugural Great Northern Bloodstock Classic at Claudelands at his latest attempt.

Mark Purdon, who drove a great race at Claudelands, will be behind him again and he has a very high opinion of the horse.

“He would have to be the best horse I’ve driven,” he said recently. “He’s a real racehorse and can sprint and stay equally well.” Purdon, who works for his father and brother, Roy and Barry, who train the horse at Clevedon, has driven Emcee three times for as many wins. Emcee is the co-backmarker on 40m, but this may not stop him ending his preparation for the Messenger meeting at Alexandra Park on a high note. Brent Mangos, who will drive another of the more-favoured runners, Milson, (off 10m), agrees. “I don’t really think 30m is that great an advantage to have,” he said yesterday. “Especially when the distance is 2600 m and some of the backmarkers are cup horses. “But I’m confident Milson will go a good race. He went well at the Pukekohe

workouts last Sunday and came his last half in 58.65. “He wasn’t too bad from the stand, but was frightened a bit by the barrier strand. It will be better when he has a few around him.” Mangos said a hard race first up over 2200 m, when Milson won and clocked a grand 2:46.8, could have taken the edge off him. In two subsequent starts Milson has managed two seconds, but was on each occasion a little disappointing. “John May (a veterinarian) did his blood after the second night at Auckland and found it to be all to blazes,” said Mangos. “He was also tying up a little.” Another blood test recently gave a much better reading, suggesting Milson will be nearer peak this evening. Given time to freshen, Tax Credit can be expected to make a forward showing. At C 9 he is the second most tightlyassessed runner in the field behind Emcee (0C). The Solo Blue Chip Stakes has drawn a good field of three and four-year-olds with Royal Albert, Papa Bear and Tricky Rhythm each boasting impressive recent form. The smart filly, Vulcan Lady, will be hard to beat in the second leg of the double, the Todd and Pollock Mile. After winning well first-up at Claudelands on January 15, Vulcan Lady has worked exceedingly well. Her main opposition could come from the Purdontrained Second Mate, and Castle Farr, which won so impressively at Cambridge in his debut earlier this month.
