Avia should prove superiority at Ellerslie tomorrow

Special correspondent Auckland Ayla, in her form of late November and December, should prove superior in the Class 21600 m at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting at Ellerslie tomorrow. Not that Ayla’s task will be easy. She has the top weight of 57kg in the Redoubt Park and her dozen rivals include Single Shot, Podgoran, Imposeur, Vizor and Dark Lace. The Redoubt Park is the first leg of the T.A.B. double, third leg of the treble and a trifecta race, one of several events on the card replete with form and possibilities. Ayla’s three attempts before she finished eighth in the Flag Inns Trophy at Ellerslie on January 2 almost produced a hat-trick. She won at Pukekohe, again at Avondale and quite brilliantly in course record time for 1600 metres, before coming second, beaten by a head, by Random Chance at Ellerslie on December 26. Ayla was not too far from Tri Belle and company in the finish of the Flag Inns, and with a break of four weeks she should be fresh and keen for further action. Jetbet: 2 Race 1 12.40 BREEDERS DAY MAIDEN $15,000; 1300 m 1 3422 All Plume 17 H. Mackinnon 55.0 2 4232 Flying Angel 7 R. Caddigan 55.0

The Gibbs stablemates, Imposeur and Dark Lace, could prove the toughest for Ayla to beat, both having won over 1600 metres at Pukekohe last Saturday. Imposeur was twice successful over 1600 metres at Ellerslie last season. She has been slow to regain winning form this term, but now that she has she can be expected to carry it on. Dark Lace, on the other hand, has been in sound form right through, including among her efforts a second to Ayla in that record-breaker at Avondale. Gold Deposit won over 2000 metres at Trentham this time last year and tomorrow is fancied to win a 2100 at Ellerslie. The Blandford Lodge completes the T.A.B. double and Gold Deposit is also the topweight (with skg) in what looks a useful field of intermediate stayers. Gold Deposit won a 2100 metres on Ellerslie’s new course two months ago, finished second to Alloch at the Cup meeting and then fourth in a 1900 at Rotorua on January 16. Yudan, a most consistent galloper in the Jillings-Yuill stable, promises to be hard to beat and Ngatira Belle, Nanu and Butler Brown should also run prominently. 3 0224 Tina’s Spirit 2 J.
