Rural art gallery opened
PA Auckland The Governor-General, Sir Paul Reeves, spent the last day of his holiday opening a rural art gallery at Matakana. Sir Paul and Lady Reeves arrived for the opening from their bach at nearby Baddeleys Beach.
Matakana, a small settlement Bkm from Warkworth, has its share of artists and they came together for the opening of the Hayward Rural Gallery. The director, Mr Roy Hayward, said he believed the gallery provided an environment more conducive to art appreciation than those in the city. “We are trying to encourage people to come from metropolitan Auckland and spend the day. The idea of rural galleries was popular overseas but relatively new in New Zealand. However, Mr Hayward said it would soon become popular here.
