Enrolment day busy at polytechnic

By

Blue-capped officials helped shepherd students of all ages and sizes through the enrolment maze at Christchurch Polytechnic yesterday. “Where do we pay?” asked one slightly confused young woman clutching a swag of course outline papers. Generally the scene in the Recreation Centre was one of order, purpose and earnest conversations between staff and enrolling students. About 3000 students filed through checkpoints, filling in forms and paying fees for one or several of more than 1000 part-

time courses. Courses vary in length from a few hours to several years. Many students will enrol later in the year when some of the courses start. An associate director of Christchurch Polytechnic, Dr Graham Logan, said he expected about 5000 people to enrol over the two enrolment days for part-time students. Figures so far seemed to indicate more people were taking part-time courses this year. Business studies, office systems and computer and science courses were the most popular. Dr Logan said this was possibly a reflection of the economic climate and how people saw their employ-

ment prospects. It was a case of first up, best qualified yesterday morning when many queued to get into the Recreation Centre.

Rachel Wilson, aged 18, of Christchurch, was one of the fortunate ones. By getting up at 5.30 a.m. she managed to get into a photography course which she hopes will help her achieve her ambition to be a commercial photographer. Today enrolments for part-time students will start at noon and the centre will close at 7 p.m. Most students wanting to take full-time courses have already enrolled and many of the courses are full.
