Seeman and Cordwell reach third round
PA Auckland Ruth Seeman and Belinda Cordwell had threeset victories yesterday to earn places in the third round of the women’s international tennis tournament in Auckland. It was the best effort of either New Zealander in the three years of the Nutri-Metics tournament. Seeman, formerly of Otago, beat the English teenager, Teresa Catlin, 57, 6-4, 6-0. Cordwell, after winning the first set 6-0 against Monique Javers (United States), dropped the second 3-6 but clinched the third 7-5. The other two New Zealanders in the second round of the Sleepyhead singles lost to seeded players. Julie Richardson went down, 2-6, 1-6, to the top seed, Patty Fendick, in 79 minutes. Claudine Toleafoa, the New Zealand junior women’s champion, lost to the eleventh seed, Susan Mascarin (United States), 3-6, 5-7. While Toleafoa was struggling for survival on the main court, Seeman
did some plain old fashioned grafting to overcome a first set deficit. “I was run around the court a bit in the first set, but I made a lot of silly errors,” Seeman said after her win. “I played my serve and volley game and had some beautiful sitters to put away only to blow the chances. “When I lost the first set, I decided to be patient instead of going for the shots.” Seeman’s next opponent will be the third seed, Terry Phelps (United States). The match will precede that between Cordwell and the fourth seed, Gretchen Magers (United States), the defending champion. An upset was the defeat of the second seed, Anne Minter (Australia), by the 17-year-old French player, Emanuelle Derly. Minter lost 3-6, 3-6, in just 62 minutes. Derly, the 1984 world junior champion and 1987 junior Australian Open runner-up, was relentless. She won the first three games of the first set,
conceded one break, but broke again to take the first set. In the second set Derly again had two breaks.
