Maori Affairs devolution

Sir, —Your editorial of January 16 pointed out the issues underlying the concern of Dr Bruce Gregory about placing responsibility for management of certain Government funds on Maori Trust Boards. With some exceptions, those boards have not an adequate management record. It would be a cruel act to task Maori trusts into likely failure and public scorn, and the poorer race relations that will surely follow. The National Party, apart from Winston Peters, has been worse than useless on this issue. In the north, National M.P.s make inflammatory statements while, here in the south, Bert Walker is preoccupied with South Africa and communism, leaving genuine questions on New Zealand’s race relations to go begging. The editorial queried whether or not tribalism should be reinforced. My opinion is that tribalism does not serve the best interests of the young Maori because it fails to equip individuals with the autonomy to survive and progress in our type of society.—Yours, etc., M. BURKE. January 23, 1988.
