Master tack to tour S.I. speedways

“Kiwi Thunder,” the monster truck similar to the United States’ "Big Foot,” stole the show at the Woodford Glen speedway at the week-end. The truck, owned by the Aucklander, Mike Parkes, is being shown throughout the South Island. Powered by an 800 h.p. super-charged Chevrolet V 8 engine, the huge truck, rearing up on 1.7 m wheels, each weighing half a tonne, systematically destroyed four piles of cars in the centre of the track.

In supporting acts, Colin Grey’s Commodore proved to be the best super saloon. Grey won the saloon car feature and had an earlier win and two thirds. Kevin Kerr took two of the three races in the A grade saloons. The Ashburton drivers, Trevor Whiting (Torana A9X) and Ally Hanson (Escort), along with the Christchurch driver, Blair Granger (Mustang), dominated the B grade saloon races with a win each.

Colin Cameron took two wins and a second in the street stock races. The first three stockcar races were tame affairs, but that changed in the feature event when Peter Ross, Bob Breen and Dale Conaglen joined forces to stop the rest of the field. At the end of the race,

with some cunning pushing and shoving tactics from the three drivers, Breen was the only finisher. Results: Streetstocks: Race one: Colin Cameron 1, Pat Power '2, Bill Olliver 3, time: 4:13.25.
