Heathcote wins suburban one-day knockout cricket
Halswell and Heathcote batted out the final of the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s one-day knockout competition at Heathcote Domain last Sunday. Heathcote eventually won with five balls to spare. Heathcote’s captain, Kit Chambers, won the toss and sent Halswell in to bat. Halswell’s captain, Wayne Burtt, paved the way for Halswell with an innings of 72 before being dismissed. Unfortunately, he was not well supported. The highest of the other scorers, Bruce Day and Andrew Hargreaves, reached only 11. Batting out
the 40 overs, Halswell reached 177 for nine. Alf Smit and Chambers took three wickets each for Heathcote. Heathcote, in reply, made a fortunate start with Trevor Paterson dropped on the first ball of the innings. Halswell dropped six catches which cost it any chance of winning. Paterson scored a quick 32, 30 of them from boundaries. Stephen Collier batted with confidence for his 37 and Warren Cresswell and Chambers also played steadily. Heathcote had only 10 men. Earlier in the day, when fielding, Murray Sandes left the field after an injury
catching a ball. With five overs remaining, Heathcote required 10 runs to win and they were well restricted for four overs, needing one run to win when the final over started. The winning run was a wide bowled by Mike Owens. The player of the day for Halswell was Burtt, and for Heathcote, Cresswell. Results: Heathcote 178/9 (S. Collier 37, T. Paterson 32, K. Chambers 22, W. Cresswell 20, J. Bennie 4/48) beat Halswell 177 (W. Burtt 72, A. Smit 3/ 31; K. Chambers 3/64). Umpires: M. G. Tindall, R. I. Bourke.
