Elephants wanted for Wellington
PA Wellington The Wellington City Council has employed an international animal dealer to find two elephants for the Wellington Zoo.
The zoo’s manager, Mr Kerry Muller, said the dealer, from the Netherlands, was negotiating with the English owners of two 18-year-old ele-' phants. The zoo expected to hear in two weeks whether it could buy the adult elephants.
Mr Muller said another option was two baby elephants from Burma but they would face rigorous testing to meet Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries standards.
If they passed the tests they would be shipped to England for up to 12 months quarantine where further tests would be made.
Mr Muller said two elephants would cost up to $lOO,OOO each, including quarantine. The biggest problem in taking the English elephants would be preparing the new zoo facilities in time, he said.
