Bone, stone, shell ...
The exhibition, “Bone Stone Shell: New Jewellery — New Zealand” will open at the Crafts Council Gallery on March 3. The Crafts Council of New Zealand has been commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare and administer this exhibition of New Zealand jewellery. Its display coincides with the International Festival of the Arts and will be the only opportunity for New Zealanders to see it before it departs on an extensive tour of Australia and Asia, returning to New Zealand in 1990.
It is the first exhibition of New Zealand jewellery to leave the country. The sponsorship by Azimuth Systems, Ltd, is the biggest ever secured for an exhibition at the Crafts Council Gallery. Twelve jewellers have been selected to exhibit and each have produced three to five works. The works have been made predominantly from materials indigenous to the Pacific, including bone (ivory, beef, whale), stone (argillite, greywacke, nephrite jade)
and shell (clam, paua, mother-of-pearl). Complementary materials include silver, wood, plastic and fibre.
The jewellers are all from the North Island. They are Paul Annear, Michael Couper, Warwick Freeman, Elena Gee, John Edgar, Roy Mason, Alan Preston, and Inia Taylor, all of Auckland, Hamish Campbell and Jenny Patrick, of Wellington, David Hegglun, of Eltham, and Paul Mason, of Mangaweka.
The exhibition closes on March 26.
