Bail opposed on stabbing charge

Bail was “strenuously” opposed for a man, aged 22, charged in relation to the stabbing of a boy, aged 16, in Christchurch last November.

Stephen James Malcolm, a beneficiary, who appeared in the District Court yesterday, was remanded in custody to February 2 by Judge Hattaway.

Sergeant M. J. South said, in opposing bail, that the complainant was stabbed in the chest and his lung was punctured. He had since left hospital. Malcolm was described by the sergeant as being dangerous to the community.

He was arrested in Auckland after a big effort by the C. 1.8. to find him.

A duty solicitor, Mr R. S. Peters, in applying for bail, said the charges would be denied. The defendant also needed daily physiotherapy for a shattered arm, the result of an accident. DEPOSITIONS A man facing two charges relating to the sale and supply of cannabis last month was remanded to March 16 for the taking of depositions. lan Gordon Fletcher, aged 30, unemployed, is charged with having cannabis in his possession for supply, and selling the drug to a person over 18. PERIODIC DETENTION Periodic detention for two months was imposed on Fiona Lisa Lee Cheryl Evans when she appeared for sentence for stealing a handbag and contents worth $llO, and attempting to unlawfully use a Cashflow card. Evans, aged 19 (Mr M. J. Glue), committed the offences on Christmas Eve last year.
