Goria Govt survives

NZPA-Reuter Rome Italy’s fragile six-month-old Government still faces the tough and uncertain task of steering its Budget through a rebellious Parliament despite surviving two confidence votes last night.

The Government, led by the Christian Democrat Prime Minister, Giovanni

Goria, called the votes after suffering repeated defeats on clauses in the 1988 Budget. Members of his own five-party coalition have voted with the Opposition on several occasions to defeat the Government in secret ballots.

Mr Goria won last night’s two open votes comfortably 348-209 and

349-210 as majority deputies fell into line. The confidence vote concerned a section of the Budget dealing with State pensions. Although he passed ’the confidence vote hurdle, Mr Goria still has a long way to go before the Budget, which should have been approved by the end of last year, gets through.
