Shuttle delay
United States space agency engineers have found new problems that could further delay resumption of American space shuttle flights, says the “Washington Post.” Now, the newspaper said, N.A.S.A. engineers have found voids in welds on two of six aft skirts, the cone-shaped section at the bottom of shuttle booster rockets. — Washington. Un-Professional The actor, Martin Shaw, who played a tough-guy in the television series “The Professionals,” was disqualified yesterday for driving at more than 161 km/h by a magistrate who confessed he had never heard of him. Shaw appeared in court at Taunton, Somerset, where he admitted driving his Mercedes 450 at 169 km/ h on the M 5 near Burn-ham-on-Sea, Somerset. He was disqualified from
driving for one month and fined £lOO ($268). — London. Volcano A volcano on a small Japanese island erupted yesterday but there were no casualties or damage, the Japan Meteorological office said. An official said by telephone that residents on Izu Oshima, 100 km south of Tokyo, could see rocks spewing out of Mount Mihara and a flame rising out of the cone for about two minutes at 3.30 p.m. local time. — Tokyo. India’s third conventional submarine from the Soviet Union has entered service with the country’s expanding naval fleet of long-range vessels, Defence Ministry officials said ■ yesterday. The vessel, renamed Sindhu Raj (Ocean King), is the third Kilo-class Soviet
submarine to join the Indian Navy since September 1986. It has already been deployed for exercises in the Bay of Bengal, the officials said. — New Delhi. Executions Seventeen people have died in a mass execution in the south-west China city of Chongqing, national radio said. — Peking. Siberian crash A Soviet Yak-40 passenger plane crashed in northern Siberia on Sunday, killing an unspecified number of people, Tass news agency has reported. Tass said the Yak, a propeller plane with about 45 seats, crashed near the airport of Nizhnevartovsk on the river Ob near the Arctic Circle after taking off on a flight to the western Siberian oil town of Tyumen. — Moscow.
