Mr Fred Sowden
Mr Fred Sowden, one of the Christchurch City Council’s longestserving employees and a former city treasurer, died on Sunday. He was 62.
Mr Sowden retired as treasurer in early 1985 after more than 41 years with the council. He began work for the local authority as an office junior in the Municipal Electricity Department in 1943.
His association with the council did not end with his retirement, however. He returned as a temporary assistant Town Clerk in 1986, working until last year.
Christchurch’s mayor, Sir Hamish Hay, yesterday described Mr Sowden as a conscientious and efficient worker who had played a part in the healthy state of the city’s finances. “He had made a significant contribution to the administration of the city,” Sir Hamish said.
Mr Sowden was educated in Christchurch at
St Andrew’s College and the University College. He joined the M.E.D. and transferred to the city treasury as deputy treasurer in 1969. He became city treasurer six years later. He was a member of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and the Chartered Institute of Treasurers. Mr Sowden is survived by three children.
