Company, boilermakers settle dispute

The dispute between the Lyttelton engineering company, Sinclair Melbourne, and the Boilermakers’ Union has been settled.

The secretary of the Boilermakers’ Union in Canterbury, Mr Hugh Rice, said the company had agreed that boilermakers at its plant would in future be made redundant on a first-on last-off basis.

Sinclair Melbourne had made five boilermakers redundant, but that had since been reduced to four.

“The whole matter has worked out. It is good the company has signed the arrangement,” said Mr Rice. He acknowledged help from the member of Parliament for Lyttelton, Dr Peter Simpson, and the industrial mediator, Mr Ernie Ball. Action by the workers prevented the Holmdale, and other ships in the port, from sailing.

The deal with the company will cover any further redundancies. The boilermakers’ award is expected to be settled with an informal document covering union workers in Canterbury and Otago. Mr Rice was hoping to hear today about a deal for settlement.

“We want the award to be a stable document for our workers,” he said.
