Summer Times
“The Sound of Silence,” a song by Simon and Garfunkel, evokes memories of the 1960 s and early 19705, protests against the Vietnam War, general unrest and insecurity about change. It is also the title of the Summer Times concert to be held in Cathedral Square today from 12.30 p.m. to 2 p.m. The concert will feature Barry McGuire, a singer-songwriter who achieved success during the 1960 s and 19705. As leader of the New Christie Minstrels and also as a solo performer, McGuire gained an international reputation with hit songs like “Eve of Destruction.” He became committed to passing on the Christian message through songs and songwriting. He will perform what he calls “yesterday’s papers,” mixed with new songs. Also featuring on the programme is the Christchurch dance company Quantum Leap, a display of tai chi chuan, yoga, and clowning.
